Lions, Spies, Grasshoppers and Your Christian Business Success

Contrary to what we may have been told, Champions are not born. They are made! I am convinced that every one of us can be a champion in our lives and in any area of endeavor we choose if only we are willing to study and apply the power keys for achieving greatness. The power keys are not hidden. They are in plain sight. The keys for becoming a true champion are not in any secret books controlled by some faceless power brokers. They are available in the bible and they work if properly applied. They have been applied by people who aspire to be champions for thousands of years. The Bible spelled them out. You can definitely be a champion in this life regardless of how you see yourself right now.

The Mentality Of A Champions

No teachings, directions or instructions you receive can ever make you a champion in your Christian based business if you do not first win the battle in your mind and develop the mindset of a champion. While it is true that God did promise us the grapes of blessing in every area of our lives, we still have to accept in our minds that the grapes are meant for us. Knowing something as a fact, and accepting that fact as true in the mind are two different things.

The grapes are placed within our reach and not in our mouths. We must reach out and pluck the grapes. You must also understand that grasshoppers do not eat grapes. According to proverbs, ‘As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he’.

The Lion And The Champion Mentality

The lion was not the biggest animal in the jungle, yet he is the champion of animal kingdom. The Lion is not the strongest animal in the jungle, yet he is the acknowledged champion by all. The lion is not even the smartest animal in the animal kingdom, yet he is the undisputed champion of all forest animals. Why? The single difference between the lion and the rest is the mentality.

The lion has the mindset and mentality of a champion and a conqueror. It believes every other animal is destined to be food for its lunch or dinner. He fears no one and is feared by all, even by those who are much bigger, stronger, and smarter. The lion displayed the mentality of a champion for so long that over time he became the champion by default. Now, every animal has an in-born instinct to fear it and cower before the lion having to do anything. When they see the lion, they don’t remember their own strength, size or cunning. All they see is themselves been torn to pieces by the almighty lion. The illusion became the reality for the rest of the animal world.

Know this for a fact: YOU HAVE TO DEVELOP AND EXHIBIT THE MENTALITY OF A CHAMPION BEFORE YOU CAN BECOME ONE. People respond and react to your mentality and over time they learn to respect and submit to it.

Goliath and The Champion Mentality

Goliath held the whole army of Israel in suspended terror for 30 days by talking and strutting like a champion. The soldiers of Israel cowered before him without him having actually beaten anybody in battle. He maintained his champion status until a little boy named David with a stronger mentality of a champion stepped into the ring. Though David must have looked like a midget compared to Goliath, he had the mentality of a champion. He believed he had all he needed to win (God on his side). He called Goliath a dog and went into battle with mere stones with full confidence of eventual victory. The victory must start in the mind. The battle for supremacy must be won in the mind before it can be demonstrated on the battlefield.

This is the first and most important power key of champions. No matter how gifted, powerful, anointed or smart you are, you simply cannot be a champion without this mentality.

Grasshoppers and The Spies

In Numbers 13, we also saw that the basic difference between the 10 spies and Joshua/Caleb was in the mentality of the two groups of spies. There was never any dispute that they saw the same thing. The majority did not lie about what they physically saw (i.e. fortified strongholds, giants, etc) and the minority (Joshua and Caleb) never really disputed the physical evidence. The difference was in how the mind interpreted the implications of those facts. The majority had the mind and mentality of losers («we were like grasshoppers in their sight» they cried.). They chose to see themselves as losers and conceded victory to their enemies even before battle (they were sure ‘the land devours its inhabitants’ though they saw people still living there).

On the other hand Joshua and Caleb had the mentality of champions. They believed that regardless of what they had seen with their eyes, they can still take the land. They were sure if the Lord is with them, they will capture the land. They understood and believed the promises of god concerning them as Overcomers. They focused on the grapes rather than the giants. They realized that grasshoppers do not eat grapes.

Mohammed Ali And The mentality Of Champions

Mohammed Ali was by no means the strongest or smartest boxer in the world in his time. However, he had what no other boxer of his era had. He had the mentality of a champion. He believed in his mind that he was destined to rule the world. He believed he could never lose to another fighter regardless of their records. He was convinced in his mind that every other boxer will fall at the round he predicted. He talked about it to anybody who cared to listen. He called himself the champion of the world when he had not yet become the champion of his state. As he continued to display that mentality in his thoughts, words and deeds, the whole world eventually succumbed to his version of reality and he reigned as the champion of the world. The other boxers often went into the ring with Mohammed Ali, focusing on not falling in the round he had predicted instead of trying to beat him. Many were already convinced in their minds they would lose anyhow. Even after he lost his title and retired, people still referred to Mohammed Ali as the only true world champion.

As you go about your Christian based business today, ask yourself, ‘what is my mentality to my Christian business opportunity’? Do you see yourself as a victim or a victor in the ever evolving business world? Do you think about all the stuff stacked against you or do you see opportunities for making a difference? Have you consciously or unconsciously accepted that this is as good as it is going to get for you in your business or do you believe that where you are now is just a temporary stepping stone on your way to Christian business success? Do you see yourself as leading or you are resigned to being led? Do an honest survey of how you really view yourself and your life. Remember, you cannot become a champion until you see yourself and think of yourself as one. As a man thinks in his heart, so he becomes!!

PGA Championship Golf Tournament – The Big Letdown

The PGA Championship is normally my least favorite tournament of the 4 majors. The PGA seems to copy the US Open in it course selection. Both tournaments typically chose old classic courses with poor optics for television and seemingly redundant holes. Contrarily this year, as was the case in 2004, the tournament was held at Whistling Straits, a «links» golf course. The Straits has a wide variety of holes and plenty of disaster awaiting every shot.

Digressing: if you saw the coverage this week you may share my impression that Whistling Straits looked like a target golf course dropped into a sandbox. When I think of a links course I think of St. Andrews, Troon and Bandon Dunes (Oregon) where they have pot bunkers in the middle of the fairway right where you want to hit your tee shot. They require that you play bump and run shots into greens. Many good drives are propelled into the rough. True links courses require precision, luck and talent. I’m not saying that Whistling Straits isn’t a great course and that it wasn’t exciting, however it’s my opinion that it isn’t a «true» links course and shouldn’t be advertised as such. It’s a beautiful monument to golf, an extremely difficult course that has brought many very good golfers to their knees.

What a great golf tournament we «almost» witnessed. Nick Watney leading by 3 strokes after three rounds fell off one of Pete Dyes’ greens and into oblivion, ending the day with an 81 and in a tie for 18th. Matt Kucher, the second round leader played steady golf but could only manage to be 1 over for that last two days. Rory Mcllroy and Steve Elkington both having several opportunities to take the lead and win the tournament as Zach Johnson’s drive for the top spot was running out of gas. The possibility of the first professional from China to win on «the tour» would have sent a tsunami throughout the east. What really made this tournament exciting was the three-way battle of the eventual winner, the very consistent Martin Kaymer and the two unbelievable bombers, Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson who put on a show of not only power but accuracy, touch and a great putting display.

In every thriller there is always a hero, requiring there also be a villain. My villain of the PGA Championship was the PGA. It’s not because they disqualified Dustin Johnson for grounding his club in a trap (a violation known by anyone who has played the game more than once) but because they didn’t designate a majority of the sand as waste areas where grounding your club is not a penalty.

We all know that sand traps, whether around greens, in the fairway, or in the rough must be raked after being used. Many of Whistling Straits’ traps were used as pathways for the huge galleries. An unending number of times during the telecast the announcers pointed out that there were roughly 1,200 sand traps on the course property. One trap was curiously placed behind one of the teeing areas, for what purpose I am unsure. The exact number couldn’t be determined because some were covered with vegetation over the years and weren’t visible. This should have been a huge «elephant in the room» on the golf course for the PGA.

Their failure to properly address this issue is bound to place Dustin Johnson’s name alongside that of Roberto DeVisenzo. Roberto was the apparent winner of The Masters in 1968 who signed his score card with an incorrect score and it is still talked about during at least half of every golf telecast. Roberto’s disqualification was uniquely ironic, because the error was not even to his advantage. The signed score card had a 4 entered, when he actually shot a 3 on the hole causing him to be disqualified.

Are the PGA Tour tournaments about golf tournaments or about the rules of golf, many of which make little sense? Dustin Johnson didn’t lose an opportunity to win his first major, the PGA lost some credibility,as well as a larger-than-life showdown between the two biggest hitters in the game.

For me, the playoff excitement and the air in my balloon escaped through a Pete Dye-sized bunker.

Is Formula One Racing the Most Popular Sport in the World?

Formula One racing takes the crown of motor racing. Its appeal is that it is a global sport. The best drivers use the best cars and the best engines from different countries. The races are staged at different tracks around the globe and to these events come the fans who follow with their flags.

Is Formula One racing the most popular sport in the world?

At the turn of the last century Formula One racing was only for the wealthy who used to enjoy spending their money racing on the weekends. It was not until 1950 when the official Formula One World Championship began with the British Grand Prix. In the 1960s, sponsorship deals promoted media and public awareness of the sport. In the 1980s popularity of the sport skyrocketed thanks to world wide television coverage.

Formula One Racing has the largest television viewing audience in the world. Today TV viewing is measured in billions and as a sporting event, rates in popularity on par with the Olympics and the Soccer World Cup. Naturally such attention attracts corporate sponsorship which pays for the advances in technology which goes hand-in-hand with Formula One Racing.

With the immense growth in popularity and insane amount of money thrown at the sport, there is no wonder countries from all around the world have put their hand up to stage the event. It is considered such a status symbol that there are more countries that want to stage the Formula One Grand Prix than there are available dates.

With every successful sport you have your sport superstars and Formula One racing is no exception. Surprisingly, Formula One drivers are highly conditioned athletes. Drivers who will be on the grid for the 2010 season include:

* Jenson Button who was the winner of the 2009 Formula One World Drivers’ Championship.

* Michael Schumacher who is seven-time champion and holds the record for the most championships.

* Lewis Hamilton who won the 2008 Formula One World Drivers’ Championship.

* Fernando Alonso who won the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 2005 and 2006.

Without the drivers there would be no racing and the drivers are the center of attention for almost everyone in Formula One. However, behind every good driver is a very good team and this is very much a team sport. The job of the team is to make sure that the driver has the best machinery running as well as it possibly can.

The leader of the team is known as the team boss or team principal and he is responsible for the running of the whole show. His aim is to recruit the best staff, use the latest state of the art computer technology, build the best car and then find a way to pay for it all. Nowadays the team bosses must be as good at attracting sponsorship as they at preparing racing cars. Some teams worth mentioning are:

* Ferrari – based in the Italy, first season in 1950, team boss is Stefano Domenicali, has won 16 world championships and their drivers are F Massa and F Alonso.

* Williams – based in the UK, first season in 1975, team boss is Frank Williams, won 9 world championships and their drivers are R Barrichello and N Hulkenberg.

* McLaren – based in the UK, first season in 1966, team boss is Martin Whitmarsh, has won 8 world championships and their drivers are J Button and L Hamilton.

Let us not forget the top men of the sport of Formula One racing.

* Bernie Ecclestone is the Formula One commercial rights holder who many say is responsible for the success of Formula One racing today.

* Jean Todt who was recently elected President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), motor racing’s governing body which looks after regulating Formula One and other international motor sports. He takes over from Max Mosley.

The Formula One car is the ultimate single-seat, open-wheel racing car. The characteristics of a Formula One racing car gives it a completely different appearance to any other racing car. It is the ultimate machine with the technology, materials and design ideas which focus on speed rather than comfort. You can only imagine the rigorous testing these cars go through. Some of the the unique elements of the Formula One racing car include:

* Open wheels. The wheels are not covered like your regular car.

* Central cockpit with room for only one driver.

* Super-light high-tech materials such as carbon fiber are used.

* Aerodynamic wings which are designed to push the car down onto the ground.

There are 19 racing events on the calender for 2010 commencing in March at Bahrain and finishing up in November in Abu Dhabi. The design of the Formula One has been transformed over the years. Each track has a unique layout with their own challenges.

I have only scratched the surface here. Formula One racing is without a doubt one of the most, if not the most exciting and interesting sports out there. It will give you hours of pleasure if you just take some time to learn a little bit about it. It is run on the weekends and thanks to Mr. Ecclestone, you should not have a problem finding a television channel to enjoy the spectacle in the comfort of your own home.

Gerald Green Dunks Or How To Increase Vertical Jump

Ok, Gerald Green finished second this year in the Slam Dunk Contest (2008). His birthday-cake-dunk was sick, but the one between the legs with no shoes on wasn’t necessary – he can do better!

But have you seen Gerald Green’s 2005 summer league dunk where he – just like Vince Carter at the 2000 Olympics – jumped over a 7 footer for the dunk?

What about the 2005 McDonald’s All-American Slam Dunk Contest that he won? And in case you forgot, Green won the NBA Slam Dunk contest in 2007!

In this contest, Green first made a two-handed slam on an alley-oop pass off the side of the backboard from teammate Paul Pierce. Then he jumped over fellow finalist Nate Robinson while wearing the No. 7 Celtics jersey of 1991 dunk champion Dee Brown – and shielding his eyes in the crook of his elbow in an homage to Brown’s memorable no-look dunk.

«I knew they were going to be tough, because those guys had the creativity and the dunking style,» Green said about the famous judges Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter and Julius Erving.

«I tried to come out with something they never did before, and hopefully they could give me a score.» – Gerald Green

At the end of the contest, G-Money effortlessly leaped over a 3-foot table for a windmill jam.

«That boy has some serious hops,» Nate Robinson said after that dunk, eyes wide. «Kid can fly.»

Actually, Gerald Green has the highest vertical leap in the NBA by now – 48 inches!

The 6’8»/ 200 lbs. shooting guard jumps so high, he has to watch out not hitting the rim with his head! On one occasion in high school, Green went higher than expected and cut his head on the rim.

«If you’re trying to glide, you want to get your footwork right,» said Green. »If you don’t get your footwork right, you won’t accelerate as far or glide as far or get as high as you need to get. Then, at the height of the dunk, you want to reach your peak. That’s where you want to get the ball where it needs to be. Sometimes I don’t reach my peak. I dunk and then I seem to go a little higher then I fall down. It has happened before. I’m just trying to put the ball in a certain area.» – Gerald Green

By now, you may think:

So what? It’s great for him that he can jump that high,

but how can I increase my vertical?

Well, besides the excellent, but common exercises like jump rope, calf raises and squats, there are some very effective exercises only few people know about:

Thrust ups:

Starting position: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, and close your knees. Then jump up only using your calves, only bending at the ankles. When your land, go jump again as high as possible.

Starting position: feet shoulder width apart, knees closed. Now go up on your toes und jump up only using your toes.

Laundry Jumps:

Take an object – a bag or something like that – and try to jump laterally over it. It can be between 10 and 20 inches high. Try to jump as high and far as you can back and forth over object.

Power Skip

Jump and try to bring your left leg up to your chest. Then do the same with the other leg.

For more exercises and crucial things to know about vertical jump (f.e. why often what you «don’t» do is more important then what you «do» do) please take a look at this page I strongly recommend:

Did you know that Green plays with only four and a half fingers on his shooting hand? He ripped his ring finger on a nail when he was about eight and doctors were forced to amputate down to the knuckle.

In case you haven’t heard yet – the 22-year old Gerald Green was released by the Houston Rockets…
